So, I sat contemplating a TV commercial one night. It's one where a Jar of Peanut Butter and a Chocolate Bunny give each other the 'eye' & then you see the Reese Egg emerge.
I looked over at Scott and asked one of my Briana questions "Why is there an egg coming out of a bunny? Don't chickens lay eggs? Why didn't they just use a Chocolate Chicken?" His reply "Uh the Easter Bunny is the one who brings the eggs"
OH yeah......
So, how exactly does an Egg come from a Bunny? And where did this imaginary Easter Bunny come from? Why does he pass out Eggs? Don't Chickens lay eggs? Since I'm not a philosopher - I just gave in to the commercial holiday and decided to think about all the wonderful memories that were created out of such a silly idea.
I remember begging mom days and days before Easter to paint the eggs each year. I can still smell the eggs boiling when I think of it... mmmm...Vinegar...
Sometimes, we'd pull out crayons and color designs on the eggs before dipping them in the colored water. The result was so magical when the color didn't stick where the white crayon had been. Sometimes we'd use the little bottles of Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow dye, and sometimes we'd buy the PAAS kits. I can remember Laura, being the one who always had to get all the pieces out and read the instructions, working for the longest time to punch out the holes in the box for the eggs to dry...she'd assemble those tiny cardboard circles for egg stands, and get the plastic 'saran wrap murals' out and ready to go. Joe was little when I was still into hiding eggs, so it was more about keeping him from spilling the dye cups or from double dipping the eggs and mixing colors.
We would divide up the eggs evenly so that no-one got to color more eggs than another. I enjoyed seeing the creations Joe came up with, so I'd sneak him a couple extra ones as long as he'd let me help. We would work for hours getting those eggs all dolled up for our hunts.
Then, either Mom & Dad would hide, or Laura and I would take turns; but we always had to count the eggs so that when we came back from our hunt we'd not leave eggs outside to rot. I do remember losing one once, and I'm pretty sure Ginger (the dog) ate it :-) We would hide and find and hide and find. The festivities would go on as long as we hadn't eaten them all. Days later, Laura would get the baskets and head outside to hide those eggs again. The only thing I didn't like about all this was mom telling us that since we were the ones who wanted to color 48 eggs, we were going to have to eat them. (I'm pretty sure she never actually made us eat all those eggs)
As much as I love those memories as a child, I love even more the REAL reason for Easter: Jesus. Of all our memories, I pray my Children will remember how important Jesus is to us; That every word of the Bible is true; That He comes to us where we are and asks us to Love & Trust in Him; to ask forgiveness for all our sins; and to believe that He Died to pay for our sins & rose again 3 days later to remain the only LIVING GOD.
"Jesus, Thank you SO much for Dying for MY sins. You are Easter. You are my Savior"

Much like the Chocolate & peanut Butter bunnies, we have mixed up our paganism with our Christianity.
It starts with the name Easter, an englishification of a pagan word. From Wikipedia - The name refers to the Eostur-monath, a month of the Germanic Year which may have been named for the goddess Eastre in Germanic paganism. -
We should call it resurrection Sunday, or something similar to that.
As for the bunny laying eggs. If you are a pagan and worship fertility, (as all pagan religions do) what is a better symbol for fertility than a bunny? How about an egg? If you mix the two, you get an Easter bunny.
Just don't teach your kids to worship fertility in the springtime when everything is coming to life after the long winter and you will be ok even if you eat Easter eggs, and get a visit from the bunny. :-)
That picture of Elijah standing there alone in his green shirt looks like his submission for America's Next Top Model, toddler male edition!!!!
